Delhi sightseeing trip would be very pleasant and make me forget all the bad experiences.
 I had in earlier visits! Life in Delhi is just like in any other metro city in India. But, 
Every tourist has a story to tell about their (bad) experiences with travel agents no 08826515199 , rikshaw drivers and so on ... But, 
I always try to re-relay one line ... the culture of the place is for the comfort of the people who live there not for the tourists who visit occasionally ...

I had decided to minimize use of rikshaws and package tours in my travel that too in Delhi. 
I took the very convenient HOHO bus. Hop-On, Hop-Off bus, popularly known as purple bus is really good facility provided by DTTDC 
and Transport authorities to the tourists. I loved it! The cost of a ticket is Rs.500 which is valid for two days, 
enough for visiting most of the interesting monuments and markets of Delhi. The office and the starting point is near Rajiv Chowk. 
The staff is friendly and the clean AC bus with comfortable seating feels good in the Delhi October heat :)

I started my Delhi Darshan trip with Firoz Shah Kotla. to call 08826515199

- Firoz Shah Kotla, a walk more see less monument, the ruins once Ferozabad.

- Lal Quila, once the residence of Mughal Emperors built by Shah Jahan

- National Gallery of Modern Art, I liked the gallery more than the art displayed (my opinion)

- Purana Quila, another walk more see less monument, construction credit goes to Humayun and Sher Shah Suri

- Humayun's Tomb, well maintained and is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. How lonely is the King even in the ornate tomb!

- Lotus Temple, much hyped and rude volunteers, didn't feel peaceful for prayers (in my experience)


- Qutab Minar, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and crowded place

- Dilli Haat, buy expensive (and/or overpriced) handicrafts and food

- Haus Khas and Saket, excellent contrast

- Jantar Mantar, I like the Jantar Mantar in Jaipur more!

- Safdarjung's Tomb, well one of the many tomb's of self-important people!

Well, for two days I hopped-on and hopped-off the purple bus and survived on ice-creams and cookies.  


I was happy about Delhi Darshan, no talking to rikshaw drivers, shopping and eating ice-cream!! For dinner,
 I had garam garam aloo paratha. I was not sick of aloo paratha yet!

The third day was all ruined by a greedy Travel Agent. I felt like a fool ... I paid Rs.150 for a Metro pass and boarded Blue-line to Aksharadham, only to see a big board 'Monday Closed' :( what a day? Well, life is like that huh?

Then I was curious to visit the Sulabh Toilet Museum. I had the Metro pass, so I went to Dwaraka Morh, the nearest Metro Station to the museum. I took an auto to Palam Dabri road. I started looking for the museum. Went around and around, I couldn't find it. Then I asked people for directions, people didn't seem to know about the museum. I had to stop looking for it when an innocent woman took me to a nearby Sulabh toilet when I asked her for directions to the toilet museum. She meant well and wanted to help me, clearly very much out of her way!! 
Wandered around Cannaught Place before heading out to the hotel.

 but my friend persuaded me to use newly opened Airport Express. Now, I can’t thank him enough. Here are a few facts before I get into the details:

Delhi Metro Time :-  Starts at 0600 hrs and operates till 2200 hrs (hours likely to be increased)
From: New Delhi  To: Airport Terminal 3
Frequency: 20 minutes
Travel Time: 18 minutes
Inaugural Fare: 80 rupees


You can make direct comparison with Heathrow/Gatwick Express. To be honest, I found it better, because it’s new.
Right after I pulled out luggage from Taxi at the New Delhi station, I found a smiling guy waiting with trolley.
He charged me 50 rupees and handed over a bill, which came out of his electronic device. No bargaining with coolies anymore.
Now, my job was just to buy a token and walk in to the train, rest was his.
Wow! I could see flight information at the metro station displayed on multiple LCD screens too.



Besides the option of buying tokens from the counter, they have installed vending machines for travelers’ convenience.
The assistants were available to help with vending machine. First the machine rejected my hundred rupee note and after I replaced it,
it fell short of change. I should not complain as testing was in progress on the third day of operation and the guys were trying their best.
The assistant requested me to buy token from the counter.call on - 8826515199 . I saw some plastic cards at the counter, upon being asked I came to know those were monthly passes for frequent travelers. The monthly passes are available for 60 one way trips at the price of 1300 rupees.



The station is undoubtedly world class with generous use of glass and steel and a treat to the eyes.
I got in to the brand new train waiting for us. Right next to the door, I found luggage shelves.
The seats are front-facing with four seats in a row and aisle at the centre.  All the staff were uniformed, well groomed and properly trained.
A plus size person might find the seat cramped, but that is manageable for a twenty minute ride.



The train started dot at 12 pm racing towards Shivaji stadium (the station name for Connaught Place).
There were no frequent audio announcements like Delhi Metro which I found logical since Airport Express has very few stoppages.
I could very well see the progress on the LCD Screen and lit up route map. It stopped only at Shivaji Stadium before Airport because other stations are not operational yet.
If fully operational, there will be three stations between New Delhi and Airport: 1. Shivaji Stadium 2. Dhaula Kuan  and 3. Delhi Aerocity.



Just a couple of minutes after Shivaji Stadium, it came out of the tunnel and this was the most beautiful view of Delhi,
the miles of greenery on both sides of the track. Far away I could see hotel Taj Palace and Maurya. Then, it crossed Dhaula Kuan, Airforce building,
Shakar Vihar and again went into the tunnel. Exactly after 18 minutes I was at Delhi Airport Terminal 3 to exit. The running time is 20 minutes,
 since a few stations are not yet operational, it took 2 minutes less.



I pulled out the luggage, loaded them on a trolley and started pushing towards Terminal 3 gates.
The signages are very clear, so I didn’t need anybody’s help. Just after five minutes, I was at the airport gate showing my passport to the security men.

QUTAB MINARQutub Minar is Delhi’s most frequented monument. A UNESCO World Heritage site, it is regarded as the tallest of its kind in the world. Qutb-ud-din Aibak, India's first Muslim ruler ordered its construction in the year 1193. The fine blend of Hindu- Muslim architectural styles, which was to give the country many famous monuments especially in the Mughal period, was thus initially used for the construction of Qutab Minar The minaret, along with other ruins and remnants surrounding it, like graves, mosques, madrassas etc. are collectively known as the Qutab Complex.

STRUCTURE:- This 234 feet high minaret is made of Red Sandstone in such a fashion that it narrows from bottom to top with each of its storey having carvings and verses from Holy Qur’an inscribed on it. To reach to the top, one needs to cover 378 steps but the effort will be worth the view as one could see a bird’s-eye view of Delhi from the top. This access has, however, been denied by the authorities of late due to safety reasons. Other structures in the Qutab complex include.

The Iron pillar. This iron column has remained free of rust since ages, becoming a mystery to the metallurgist around the world. Legend has it that anyone who can bind the pillar, with their indorse towards the structure, will have their wish acknowledged.Tomb of Iitutmish,Alai Minar, And Quwwat-ul-Islam.

HUMAYUN'S TOMB :-HUMAYUN TOMBHumayun’s tomb is one of the most picturesque structures in the city. Located in Nizamuddin, Delhi and consisting of a complex of monuments, the site is enlisted as a UNESCO World Heritage monument. The place is the production of Mughal architectural styles which reach its pinnacle in Taj Mahal and naturally, its pattern has a lot in common with the Taj Mahal's. Humayun died in the year 1556 and as a tribute to the Emperor, his widow, Hamida Banu Begum ordered its construction in 1569 which took 8 years to complete.

The complex includes a Persian style garden, the first of its kind in South Asia region. Extensive use of marbles and carvings lends to its charm. A double dome surmounts the roof and a total of 124 chambers constitute the Ground floor plan. It is believed that Humayun’s tomb set-up a vogue in the Mughals for Garden-tombs and several other Mughal imperial architectures followed suit. The chambers contain sarcophagus of Humayun and several other were added later, including that of his wife. A symbol of a box of writing instruments on the sarcophagus indicates a male occupant whilst a writing slate symbol indicating a female. A must-see for everyone.

 RED FORT :-RED FORTRed fort, or Lal Quila in Hindi, is a Mughal architecture located in Old Delhi. Constructed as the royal residence in the Mughal capital of Shahjahanabad by Emperor Shahjahan in the year 1639 AD., the fort is now a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Situated along the river Yamuna which feds numerous moats in and around the place, the structure is surrounded by walls made of red sandstone.

Red fort, like other Mughal monuments in the country, possesses a unique charm due to the Indo-Muslim architecture style combination used during those times- which later on became famous as the 'Shahjahani style'. Shahjahan’s reign witnessed the Mughal artistic abilities at its very best, with the Taj Mahal being its supreme example.

Qutab Minar

The Qutab Minar is located at a tiny village called Mehrauli in South New Delhi. Qutub-ud-din Aibek of the Slave Dynasty, who took possession of New Delhi in 1206, built it. It is a fluted red sandstone tower, which tapers up to a height of 72.5 metres & is covered with intricate carvings & verses from the holy Qur'an. The landmark of New Delhi is a place to see.

Laxminarayan Temple

Also called the Birla Mandir, the Laxminarayan Temple was built by the Birla family in 1938. It is a temple with a immense garden & fountains behind it. The temple attracts thousands of devotees on Janmashtami day, the birthday of Lord Krishna. The temple is a place to visit by most of the tourist coming to New Delhi.

Humayun's Tomb

Humayun's wife Haji Begum built his Tomb nine years after his death. Designed by a Persian architect named Mirak Mirza Ghiyas, & done in 1565, the building was a trendsetter of the time by remains a must visit place in New Delhi till date.

Jama Masjid/Chandni ChowkJama Masjid

The living legacy of New Delhi is Shahjahanabad. Created by the builder of Taj Mahal, this city, with the Red Fort as the point of interest and Jama Masjid as the praying centre, has a fascinating market planned to shine under the light of the moon, called Chandni Chowk. Shahjahan planned Chandni Chowk so that his daughter could shop for all that they wanted. It was divided by canals filled with water, which glistened like silver in moonlight. The Purana Quila is a nice example of medieval military architecture. Built by Humayun, with later-day modifications by Sher Shah Suri, the Purana Quila is a monument of bold design, which is strong, straightforward & every inch a fortress. It is different from the well planned, carefully decorated, & palatial forts of the later Mughal rulers. Purana Quila is also different from the later forts of the Mughals, as it does not have a complex of palaces, administrative & recreational buildings, as is usually present in the forts built later on. The main purpose of this now-dilapidated fort was its utility, with less emphasis on decoration. The Qal'a-I-Kunha Masjid & the Sher Mandal are important monuments inside the fort.

The Jantra Mantra (literally the 'instrument and formula' and often called the Jantar Mantar), is located in the modern city of New Delhi, It was made by Sawai Jai Singh. A must visit place in New Delhi
